La serie ALF è un prequel dell'omonimo telefilm, in quanto narra le vicende del protagonista - il cui nome significa Alien Life Form, cioè forma di vita aliena - sul suo pianeta natale Melmac, in compagnia della sua ragazza Stella (Rhonda, nel telefilm) e degli amici Skip e Sloop, prima dell’esplosione che lo ha portato con la sua astronave sulla Terra.

Ogni episodio è preceduto da uno spezzone filmato in cui compare il pupazzo di ALF visto nel telefilm; ciò avverrà anche nel cartone animato Ritorno al futuro.

In seguito, il protagonista di questo cartone animato è apparso anche nella serie ALF Tales.

ALF compare anche nel film di animazione I nostri eroi alla riscossa.
