La Terra è in pericolo a causa dell'inquinamento.
Gaia, lo spirito della Terra, al fine di preservare l'ecosistema presente sul nostro pianeta, dona cinque anelli magici agli Ecodifensori (Planeteers, nella versione originale), un gruppo composto da cinque ragazzi speciali provenienti dai vari continenti del mondo:

- dall’Africa, Quam (Kwamee, nella versione originale), con il potere della Terra;
- dal Nord America, Willy (Wheeler, nella versione originale), con il potere del Fuoco;
- dall’Unione Sovietica, Linka, con il potere dell'Aria;
- dall’Asia, Gi, con il potere dell'Acqua;
- dal Sud America, Mathias (Ma-Ti, nella versione originale), con il potere del Cuore.

Quando tutti insieme uniscono il potere dei loro anelli, appare il supereroe che difende l'ambiente: Capitan Planet.

I nemici che tentano di ostacolarli nelle loro missioni sono:
- Zarm, lo spirito della guerra e della distruzione (opposto di Gaia);
- Mister Virus, malvagio uomo dalle sembianze suine;
- gli Ecovillains (opposti agli Ecodifensori): Looten Plunder, che possiede l'anello della deforestazione (opposto al potere della Terra); Sly Sludge, detentore dell'anello dello smog (opposto al potere dell'Aria); Duke Nukem, con l'anello della radioattività (opposto al potere del Fuoco); Verminous Skumm, che ha con sè l'anello della tossicità (opposto al potere dell'Acqua); Lady Veleno, in possesso dell'anello dell'Odio (opposto al potere del Cuore).
Gli Ecovillains sono in grado di evocare Capitan Flagello (Captain Pollution, nella versione originale), il più acerrimo nemico di Capitan Planet.
