Gustavo è un personaggio molto controverso: egli è egoista, vanitoso, furbetto, violento, irascibile, vendicativo, servile con i potenti e prepotente con i deboli. Ma, fondamentalmente, egli è una vittima dei tempi moderni, a cui spesso si ribella in maniera aggressiva - similmente ai personaggi dei film coevi di Alberto Sordi - e, per questo, molti potevano riconoscersi in lui all'epoca (e non solo).
