I protagonisti sono dei simpatici animali antropomorfi che lavorano nell'ospedale di Hilltop, tra cui il bonario dottor Matthews (un cane), la graziosa infermiera Kitty (una gatta), l'efficiente ostetrica Sally (un ippopotamo) ed il dottor Atticus (una tartaruga), un dormiglione incallito.
Essi accudiscono i loro pazienti - tra cui la signora Hindianapolis (un'elefantessa) - in un'atmosfera affettuosa ed amichevole.
