Per salvare l'imprudente Rick Jones, il Dottor Bruce Banner assorbe le radiazioni di una bomba gamma sperimentale e, da quel momento in poi, quando il suo stato d'animo è agitato, si trasforma in un iracondo e fortissimo gigante verde di nome Hulk. Bruce non ricorda nulla di ciò che accade quando diventa Hulk, e lo stesso vale per Hulk quando è il dottor Banner: ciò gli causa parecchi problemi nel tentativo di mantenere il suo segreto (soprattutto perchè lavora presso gli stessi militari che danno la caccia a Hulk!). Tuttavia, Hulk non è malvagio - come sa Rick Jones, che diventa il suo unico amico - ed i suoi attacchi di ira si scatenano solo quando si sente minacciato.

Questa serie animata è composta da 39 episodi di circa 6 minuti l'uno e ne venivano trasmessi 3 ogni volta, in modo tale da costituire 13 episodi interi di circa 20 minuti complessivi: ciò avveniva spesso nelle serie americane degli anni '60 e '70, poichè in tal modo potevano essere assemblate per comporre uno show animato più lungo e vario.

Ne sono stati realizzati anche due remake omonimi nel 1982 e nel 1996.

Questa serie è stata originariamente trasmesso in uno show chiamato I supereroi Marvel assieme a quelle di Capitan America, Iron Man, Sub Mariner e Thor, che, in seguito, sono invece state trasmesse come cinque serie autonome.
