Questo cartone animato è una specie di sit-com animata con protagonista la quattordicenne Penny Proud, che vive in una famiglia afroamericana molto particolare, composta da papà Oscar, mamma Trudy, i suoi due piccoli fratelli gemelli (Bebe e Cece) e la nonna (chiamata Sugar Mama), oltre al barboncino di casa. Ella deve affrontare quotidianamente delle situazioni tipiche della sua età, in cui deve confrontarsi sia con i suoi coetanei che con gli adulti.

Il termine inglese proud ha il significato di orgoglioso (i protagonisti, infatti, sono orgogliosi di essere afroamericani).

Per concludere la serie, è stato prodotto un film per la TV: La famiglia Proud - Il film.
