Il dottor Donald Blake è un medico claudicante che, tentando di sfuggire da un’invasione aliena, trova rifugio in una grotta, all'interno della quale si imbatte in uno strano bastone: battendolo a terra, questo si trasforma nel magico Mjöllnir e il dottor Blake diventa il mitico Thor, il dio nordico del tuono. Sconfitti gli alieni grazie ai suoi nuovi poteri, è lo stesso Odino, padre di tutti gli dei nordici, che rivela al dottor Blake che egli è l’incarnazione del dio Thor e che è giunto per lui il momento di tornare ad Asgard, la terra degli dei. Thor, però, ama troppo la Terra e decide di restarvi per diventarne il protettore. Da qui in poi, Odino sarà sempre ostile nei confronti di Thor, ma, d’altra parte, solo lui può lottare contro le minacce cosmiche che incombono sul nostro pianeta e, soprattutto, contro suo fratello Loki, il malvagio dio degli inganni.

Questa serie è stata originariamente trasmesso in uno show chiamato I supereroi Marvel assieme a quelle di Capitan America, Hulk, Iron Man e Sub Mariner, che, in seguito, sono invece state trasmesse come cinque serie autonome.
