Il successo del Muppet Show, il celebre show interpretato dai pupazzi animati creati da Jim Henson, spinse quest'ultimo a produrre anche dei veri e propri film su questi personaggi. In uno di questi - “I Muppets alla conquista di Brodway” - si narra di come Kermit avesse conosciuto gli altri Muppets e di come l'iraconda maialina miss Piggy immagini la sua vita se lei ed il suo amato ranocchio si fossero conosciuti quando erano in fasce. Ciò costituì lo spunto in base al quale venne ideata la serie animata dei Muppets, che parte dall'idea che i più famosi tra loro abbiano condiviso la loro infanzia: i piccoli Kermit e Piggy passano così il loro tempo in una stanza piena di giocattoli assieme all'orso comico Fozzie, al cane pianista Rowlf, allo sfortunato Gonzo (che ama Piggy, mentre lei ama Kermit), all'ingordo Animal, al tecnologico Scooter ed alla rampante Skeeter, sotto la custodia della loro baby-sitter Nanny (di cui si vedono solamente le gambe, analogamente a quanto capita per alcuni personaggi umani in Tom & Jerry). Ad essi, di tanto in tanto, si aggiungono lo scienziato Bunsen - il cui nome trae origine dal celebre becco - ed il suo assistente Beaker. L'elemento originale di questa serie, rispetto al Muppet Show, consiste nel fatto che i Muppet Babies, oltre a cantare delle deliziose canzoncine, che sono state tutte doppiate in italiano, sono in grado di usare la loro fervida immaginazione - tramite cui vengono visualizzati spezzoni di film celebri all'epoca - per vivere delle straordinarie avventure.

Questa serie ottenne tanti e tali premi da parte del pubblico e della critica negli anni '80 che diede origine alla moda (ancora oggi dilagante) della produzione di versioni baby di tante altre serie famose (tra cui Baby Felix & friends, Baby Looney Tunes, Flintstone Kids, Tiny Toons e Tom & Jerry Kids).
